Black women of all ages with 4C, 3B and 2A tresses assembled at the fifth annual Palm Beach County CurlFriends Expo in Delray Beach on July 29 to talk afro puffs, bantu knots, deep conditioning, hair breakage and the do’s and don’ts of being natural.
Host and event creator, Kathy Previl said that after transitioning her hair to its natural state a decade ago, she pondered the thought of bringing “education and experience of natural hair into the Palm Beach community.” CurlFriends is still going strong five years later.
Event attendees received swag bags loaded with natural hair goodies from brands like Mielle’s Mint Deep Conditioner, Cantu Shea Butter and Aunt Jackie’s Fix My Hair. During speaking sessions, natural women sporting mohawks and blonde buns hung on to every syllable that Conchita Pleasant, Founder and CEO of Nefertiti’s Secrets, spoke about empowerment and black hair care. Vendors, Mahogany Hair Salon, Hydra and Get Up & Live encouraged women to make a pledge amongst fellow naturalistas to take better care of their hair, skin and health.
After witnessing live demos and seeing the magic of curl patterns change before their eyes, attendees were reassured that as a natural, water is your best friend. And as for the success for PBC CurlFriends, Previl said, “I have no regrets. The event gets better and better every year.”
