Carfax Donates 65 New Bikes To Homeless Coalition of PBC

Excited residents gathered at the Senator Philip D. Lewis Center (1000 45th Street) in West Palm Beach this afternoon to collect a brand new bike at The Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County’s donation center. Managers from Carfax made a special donation of 65 Huffy Cranbrook Cruisers, bike locks and helmets to the organization as part of their annual community outreach project.

Lyndsay Seward, Operations Coordinator for Carfax said, “We do three strategic meetings with our dealer-business unit a year and at every meeting we do a community service project.” This year the chosen project was a bike building community service event with Carfax management teams. After the bikes were built, Seward says she looked for places to donate the bicycles and saw that the Homeless Coalition of PBC was in need.

Martin Calderon, a client who has been living on campus at the Lewis Center for one week was excited to receive one of the donated bikes. “I am trying to take advantage of every opportunity that is going to help me better my situation,” Calderon said. “To go locally, go to the store, potentially go find a job, this is an opportunity for us to be mobile.” Jessica Medina, another resident, called her brand new bike “a Godsend.”

Uwe Naujak, Homeless Coalition Resource Coordinator said that this large donation will clear the organization’s bicycle waiting list for now. “Public transportation is one of the problems,” Naujak said. “For a homeless person to get around in Palm Beach County is very difficult, especially if you are looking for a job, or even if you have a job. So this will make it a lot easier on them when they have their own bike.”

Besides bikes, The Homeless Coalition of PBC accepts donations like clothing, toiletries, bedding, household items and anything that makes acquiring and maintaining stable living conditions possible. The organization also partners with other county agencies to provide first, last and security vouchers for residents in need of housing.
